Soft Structured Carrier Tutorials
SSCs are full-buckle carriers, like Ergobaby or Tula carriers. The best pattern out there is the
SewToot Little Pick-Me-Up. This is a paid pattern, but it is very thorough, well recommended, and
SewToot adds you to a private support group on Facebook. The support group is a place to ask questions, as well as talk to others about modifying the pattern to best suit your needs. The
SewToot can be modified to match nearly any SSC modification you desire. They even have a modification for a mesh panel for hot weather wearing!
SewToot also has a newer pattern called the
Voyager, which is a less structured style of SSC worn apron-style, similar to a Connecta. It has a lot less padding, making it great for rolling up in a diaper bag, and can be made with water-safe materials to wear in the pool or at the splash pad.
That said, several moms out there have offered free tutorials on their blog. A few of these are listed below.
Be sure to use safe, weight-tested webbing and buckles! Buckles from camping stores are a great option. Also, before starting, I recommend reading our pages on choosing a
safe fabric (for SSCs, an even heavier weight of 7oz+ is recommended) and
general construction safety tips.
